Abstract:
Rally provides powerful reporting capabilities to track software teams' progress with Canned Reports on the Reports tab. Custom Reports substantiate the list of Canned Reports with the ability to create your own actionable reports. With Custom Reports, you can slide and dice your development data to make fact-based informed decisions and there are no limit to the number of Custom Reports you can create.
Custom Reports can be shared with other users for viewing or editing, or they can be kept private to the user creating them.
How To:
You can access Custom Reports from the Reports tab.
To add a new Custom Report:
- Select the main Reports tab. This tab shows all available reports/charts in a consolidated view. The Custom Reports are displayed in the right-hand column. Click Add New in the upper right-hand corner.
- The following Report Designer window is displayed:

To Define a Custom Report:
- Click the "I want to see..." drop down list box and select a value.
- Next, select "Broken down by..." to define how the data is grouped in the report.
- Optionally, select filter criteria to narrow the report results. You may select one value for each attribute to filter, setting different value criteria for each, or selecting the filter value dynamically for Iteration, Release or Tags filters
- Click the "Run" button. The report preview is displayed with the result for your criteria.
- From the preview, you can Save the report, Email it to others, Save it as PDF or return to the report definition screen to change your criteria.
To Run a Custom Report:
- Select the main Reports tab. This tab shows all available reports/charts in a consolidated view. The Custom Reports are displayed in the right-hand column. Click the thumbnail or Report name to run the Custom Report.
To Save a Custom Report:
- Run the report and click Save in the upper right-hand corner.
- Name the Report and add a brief description.
- Select one of the following options for the Report Visiblity:
- Just Me - The Report will only be visible to you.
- Anyone can view - The Report will be visible (read only) to everyone.
- Anyone can view, edit or delete - The Report will be visible to everyone and anyone can edit or delete the Report.
4. The Custom Report is added to your list of Custom Reports on the Reports tab
From a Custom Report, you can:
- Email, print, or save as a .pdf or .jpg.
Sample Custom Reports:
To view the number of stories vs. the number of defects (and associated points) scheduled in a release accross multiple teams, select:
- I want to view: Count, Plan Estimate
- Broken by: Project and then by Type
- Filter: Release = <Release Name> or [futhlp:Choose Dynamically]
To view the work remaining to deliver a release feature (when feature is identified by tag), select:
- I want to view: Task Estimate, Task To Do
- Broken by Tags and then by Project
- Filter: Tags = <Feature Tag> AND Release = <Release Name>
To identify blocked work-in-progress (stories, defects, test cases) for a specific iteration, select:
- I want to view: Plan Estimate
- Broken by Schedule State and by Type
- Filter: Schedule State = In-Progress AND Blocked =Yes AND Iteration = <Iteration Name>
You can quickly edit or delete Custom Reports from the main Reports Tab.
The Report Designer data is scoped to the current project and its children projects.
The Report Designer allows you to run a report and see the results without saving or overwriting and existing report.
Did you know....
- Timesheet reports require the Time Tracking module enabled in your subscription. When the module is disabled, timesheet reports show empty results.
- When accessing your reports from the Reports tab, you can email, print, or save any report as a .pdf or .jpg.
- Custom Reports are saved in alphabetical order.
- When running a Custom Report, the right most columns list your "I want to see..." selection, while the left most columns represent your "Broken by..." selection

I believe that Rally already provides lots of 'custom reporting' capabilities. How about calling this new functionality our 'Custom Reports Wizard' or something like that- to differentiate it from what already exists. That's my 2c! :-)
