Question

Integration with a time tracking tool?

    Title:
Integration with a time tracking tool?
    Summary:

Contractors needing to track time entries want to be able to track time against actual tasks in Rally.

    Full Description:

Our company consists of contractors. We need to keep track of time entries for invoicing purposes. We're looking for an example of a time tracking tool that pulls in tasks from Rally, so that time can be entered against those tasks and update the tasks in Rally.

Hey Gerry thank you for posting this discussion.  We do hear requests for integrating to time tracking tools for reporting purposes. - Do you have a specific time tracking tool in mind?
      - Do you have an idea of what this integration would look like?
          What fields would exchange data?
Would this need to be real time or could it be a manual integration?
Is it a one way or bi-directional integration?

I will forward a link to this discussion to some of our other customers and prospects who might be interested.

      Hi Gerry,

We're very interested in this same topic.  We are pushing agile throughout our enterprise and would live to eliminate dual time entry both in Rally and our time tracking solution.

Chris, what tool are you using for time tracking right now?

I've posted my thoughts in another thread, but here they are:

Magpie, I agree with that approach also. Another service provides a robust set of features that don't have to be baked into Rally. The challenge is finding a tool that supports the fields that need regular updating.

What I would like to see for integration is the following:
      1. Projects in Rally can be imported into the tool. Project title is the main thing.
      2. User can see his list of tasks for a project, like on the My Tasks widget.
      3. User can add a time entry, which is added to actual hours.
      4. User can update the time remaining at the same time as booking actual time.
      5. User can change the status of the task.
      6. User can see total time booked for tasks on the project. This should be something the timesheet app does already.
      7. User can see total time booked for a date range. This should be something the timesheet app does already.
      Anything else seem pertinent?

We are interested in an integration with Harvest a hosted software as a service time recording capability. This already been used by another hosted help desk system Zendesk (btw Zendesk supports the ITIL methodology which puts it above most helpdesk solutions).

The vision is to use Zendesk as the customer front end (similar to Salesforce Case Management Integration) and have change requests passed back into the Backlog. Time recording as a separate function is then updatable from both Zendesk and RallyDev - a SOA in action!

We have found these services to have good API's; there seems good opportunity that Rallydev falls into the same bracket.

We seem to have a duplication of feature request - see http://agilecommons.org/posts/3055254cff#2501

We are currently using Tasktop - the Eclipse Plug-In. I would LOVE to see this feature implemented. Would consider moving to another Agile management tool if such functionality were offered elsewhere.

We have started a beta program for the upcoming Time Tracking functionality in Rally. If you are interested to join, please send an email to betas@rallydev.com. We can enable the first Time Tracking increment in your Rally subcription for you to evaluate the value of this feature and provide guidance on what you would want it it be.
